How I Shaved Off 15 Lbs. in 60 Days

November 11th, 2009 by Rebecca Nolans

I’d like to share a quick story with you, now that you’re here. This has been a really interesting year for me, full of ups and downs.

Like many Americans, I was laid off from my job earlier in the year. I had nowhere to go all day and I ended up at the computer most of the time. I was eating but I wasn’t moving, and this led to a lot of weight gain.

I was confused by this. I generally don’t eat too badly, though I do sneak in a few treats here and there. I hadn’t changed my eating habits though. The fact that I wasn’t as active all day caused the weight gain.

Fortunately, I’ve turned things completely around. I’ve lost so much weight and I have some great results to show for it. Most importantly, I feel better than I have in years.

First and foremost, I decided that drinking soda simply wasn’t a good idea. Even a diet soda isn’t good for you, as the artificial chemicals and sweeteners are said to have a negative effect on the body.

I didn’t stop at sodas though. I decided to eliminate any foods from my diet that had cane sugar or artificial sweeteners. I would get my sweet fix from fruits, and I really came to enjoy them.

Next, I make it a point to run at least 4 times weekly. I really try for 5 or 6 when I can, but 4 should do the job, especially if you aim for a faster speed each time.

Third, I simply don’t eat fried foods anymore. Hard to give up, but it feels great after a few weeks.

While I still haven’t found a job, I’ve been writing about copper mailbox deals and reviewing deals on brass mailboxes on sale.

The Human Knee Joint

November 8th, 2009 by Jonathan Blood Smyth

The knee, like the elbow to some extent, is a hinge joint but not a simple one. The lower part of the thigh bone expands into the femoral condyles and the upper shin bone likewise expands into the tibial condyles, the junction of these two enlarged areas forming the knee joint. The small bone on the outside of the knee, known as the fibula, is not involved in weight bearing nor is actually part of the knee joint, serving only as an attachment area for the muscles controlling the ankle, foot and toes. The knee functions as a hinge dividing the leg, allowing the exertion of high levels of muscular propulsive force, the folding of the leg in bending and the shortening of the leg in stepping to allow efficient gait.

As the knee approaches full extension or straightening the main thigh muscles (the quadriceps) engage to achieve full active extension and guide the knee into its locking position. Apes are unable to straighten their knee in standing, whilst humans can extend their knees fully in standing which allows very low energy usage. As the knee gets closer to full extension the thigh muscle rotates the knee inwards to allow it to reach the locking point. Humans can stand with their knees straight for long periods with little activity in the quadriceps and hip muscles, combining stability and low effort.

Inside the joint are two crescent-shaped structures made of cartilage, looking a little like banked tracks, accommodating the large rounded femoral condyles. Their exact function is not clear but they may contribute to guiding the knee towards locking, stabilise the knee by centring the condyles during bending and straightening and evening out any potential unwanted small movements during joint motion. The kneecap is the other part of the knee joint and is a small bone with an inner lining of articular cartilage which is suspended in front of the knee joint.

The patella or kneecap is situated in the tendon of the quadriceps muscle which is the major muscle at the front of thigh and responsible for pushing us up from sitting and up and down stairs. The joint surface of the patella fits into the large groove between the front of the femoral condyles, sliding up and down the groove as the knee bends and straightens. The function of the patella appears to be to magnify the power of the quadriceps muscle and so improve its ability to exert the very large forces needed to move the body weight.

The flexion and extension plane is the natural plane of knee movement as this normal alignment makes knee pain problems occur less commonly. A bow-legged or knock-kneed posture allows abnormal sideways stresses to be applied to the knee, forcing pressure onto one side of the joint and increasing wear stresses which with time can cause pain symptoms or arthritic changes. Patellar misalignment can also occur, forcing one of its facets against the side of the femoral condyle groove and causing impingement pain due to increase in the friction forces.

The high mechanical forces transmitted through the knee are responsible for a variety of knee conditions, often affecting the kneecap or the knee cartilages (more properly called menisci). The knee typically has a range of motion from full extension (stated as zero) to full flexion at around one hundred and forty degrees, depending to some extent on body size and bodily mobility. There is an important degree of internal glide and slide of the femoral condyles as they move on the reciprocally moving tibial surfaces.

The gliding of the tibia backwards and forwards makes certain that the femoral condyles will not slide off the tibia during movement. During knee motion one of the bones moves in relation to the other one, in the sense that the movement of one is occurring over the other which is also moving in a complementary pattern. This allows a much greater range of movement than would otherwise be possible. There is a degree of rotation of the femur which occurs at the knee joint and this is obvious as the knee approaches full extension and the femur turns in slightly to achieve the knee lock.

During Pregnancy A High Fat Diet Can Lead To Severe Liver Disease In Offspring

November 6th, 2009 by Aleksandro Imles

Scientists have discovered a previously unknown link between a mother’s diet in pregnancy and a severe form of liver disease in her child.

In a study, published in the journal Hepatology, researchers at the University of Southampton found that a high fat diet during a woman’s pregnancy makes her offspring more likely to develop a severe form of fatty liver disease when they reach adulthood. The findings are another piece in the jigsaw for scientists who believe diets containing too high levels of saturated fat may have an adverse effect on our health.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition associated with obesity and caused by the build up of fat in the liver. The condition advances in some people and it is important to understand the factors that contribute to disease progression. Until recently, NAFLD was considered rare and relatively harmless but now it is one of the most common forms of liver disease that may progress to cirrhosis a serious life threatening chronic liver disease.

Professor Christopher Byrne, with colleagues Dr Felino Cagampang and Dr Kim Bruce, of the University’s School of Medicine and researchers at King’s College London, conducted the study, funded by the BBSRC. Prof Byrne explained: “This research shows that too much saturated fat in a mother’s diet can affect the developing liver of a fetus, making it more susceptible to developing fatty liver disease later in life. An unhealthy saturated fat-enriched diet in the child and young adult compounds the problem further causing a severe form of the fatty liver disease later in adult life.”

The next stage of this research, also funded by the BBSRC, will be to understand, more precisely, the reason why fatty liver disease develops and to intervene to prevent the fatty liver disease occurring.

The University’s School of Medicine has a worldwide reputation for its pioneering research into the relationship between mothers’ diets in pregnancy and future health problems in their offspring.

Importance of Will Power for Weight Loss

November 4th, 2009 by Walter Marsaki

Many people never really start a weight loss program unless something very big forces them to do it.

Just think about this – how many of us really want to do something to improve in some area of our life. But very few of us actually start taking positive action to really improve in that area.

Most others will just keep on wishing and wanting to improve without putting any real efforts. Among the few who do take action, fewer still continue their efforts despite initial setbacks.

There are very few of those who take positive action and persist until they reach their goals. That is why so many people complain that they are unable to reach their goals.

The same is true for weight loss. Many people are unhappy with their weight and want to do something about it. But they don’t get around to actually do something.

Some among them will start a diet program, exercising or something else in order to lose weight. But most of them will give up easily or hop from one tip to another and end up frustrated than before.

A selected few will show patience to continue with a program they selected and persist with it inspite of many failures and obstacles. It might take them many days to see results, but they will go on without stopping.

If you want to lose weight and be healthy, then you have to show such kind of grit and determination. If you have a strong will power, it can be easier to stick to your plans.

So, before even starting out on a weight loss plan, it would be better if you can work on improving your will power. Or atleast you should improve it while working on your weight loss goals.

Many people start a weight loss plan enthusiastically. But because of their weak will power, they will give up very quickly.

If you don’t want to be like these people, then you have to work on improving your will power to lose weight. If your will power becomes strong, then it will be helpful to you in other areas and goals in your life apart from weight and fitness.

Remember that your very first effort to lose weight, may not be a successful one. Your first weight loss program may prove to be a complete flop.

You will learn through trial and error in most cases. If you don’t have the patience to carry on in such trying circumstances, then it is unlikely that you will see success.

Follow a proven program for rapid weightloss. Read more about quick weight loss plan now.

Obesity Is The New Health Problem

November 3rd, 2009 by Walter Marsaki

Obesity is spreading very rapidly throughout the world. More and more people are become overweight.

Sometimes it seems that this problem is getting out of hand. Governments are unable to control this growing epidemic.

Who is to be blamed for this rising obesity? The media, food companies, general public all are responsible for this.

The media advertises food products which are not any good from nutritional point of view, but earn good amount via advertising to the media companies.

We are bombarded with constant advertisements and thus youngsters are getting addicted to junk food and unhealthy drinks. In the process, they are getting fatter by the day.

The government is not doing its bit to regulate such ads or to promote healthy habits among people, specially teenagers.

Add to this, the impact of technology. Technology has made our lives easy – in fact too easier. We have become lazy and seek comfort in all situations in our life.

We have given up exercising and get little to no physical activity. Furthermore – TV, video games, computers and internet are causing us to adopt sedentary lifestyles.

The fashion industry and celebrities are also partly responsible for this obesity problem. Too much emphasis is placed on looks and figure.

Celebrities with pencil thin figures are shown to the general public. This creates a huge pressure on people to maintain their physique.

Fat people are shunned and ridiculed. As a result people start adopting unhealthy methods like dieting and skipping meals.

This habit will result in dropping of metabolism rate, and thus the very problem we are trying to run away from, will come upon us.

Nowadays, people eat out a lot. They often go to restaurants. Earlier the whole family used to sit together to eat meals. Now that is not possible most of the times.

The traditional family lunches and dinners were good for everyone. Special care was taken to prepare healthy meals.

Family members used to bond together and eat heartily. Thus they could avoid overeating and unhealthy foods.

Now most of the time, people eat outside. They will often overeat in restaurants. They are also not very picky about what they eat.

Lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating habits, frequent dining out, junk food habit are some of the major factors which are contributing to the rising obesity problem.

Children are not being taught healthy habits by their parents. Earlier parents used to put a lot of stress on such habits.

Nowadays, parents are mostly concerned just about the child’s career. They are not too much worried about his or her eating habits.

Lack of guidance by elders have resulted in poor sense of eating for children. They are not growing up as health conscious children.

Here is a plan for – rapid weight loss. Read to discover quick weight loss plan

Why You Should Be Eating Nuts

November 2nd, 2009 by Cristian Truers

Nuts are tasty, loaded with good fat, protein, fiber, nutrients and phytochemicals that are heart healthy and potentially good for the waistline. Barring allergies, there aren’t many reasons not to include nuts in your diet. Let’s take a look at some interesting studies, tips and tidbits about nuts.

Nuts and the Heart

A study of 31000 Seventh Day Adventists that ate nuts more than 4 times per week were half as likely to die of a heart attack than those who ate nuts less than once a week. The Iowa Women’s Health Study came to a similar conclusion: Women who ate nuts or seeds 4 times per week were 40% less likely to die from heart disease than similar women who didn’t eat nuts. The Nurses’ Health Study showed that those who ate at least 140g/week of nuts were 35% less likely to be diagnosed with heart disease than those who ate less than 30g/month. Nuts and Weight

Most studies have shown that adding nuts to the diet does not cause people to gain much weight, if any at all. As an example, researchers gave participants 45-70g of almonds every day (320 calories worth) and gave them no further instructions about food intake. After 6 months, participants gained a very miniscule amount of weight (.2 lbs in women, 1.4 lbs in men). This study was funded by the almond industry.

There aren’t many studies that show nut consumption to help people lose weight, but one study showed that a low calorie diet that included almonds led to greater weight loss than an equal calorie diet that did not include almonds.

The Seventh Day Adventist and Nurses Health Study showed that those who regularly ate nuts weighed less than those who did not.

The Best Nuts

Are some nuts better than others when it comes to health benefits? All nuts contain good fats, fiber and proteins, but different kinds of nuts have different nutrient profiles.

Almonds are richest in vitamin E (35% recommended daily intake) and calcium (8%) per 1 oz. (30g) serving. Brazil nuts are highest in selenium with just 1 supplying a days worth. Cashews are richest in copper and zinc Peanuts (technically a legume) contain the antioxidant resveratrol, and are highest in protein and arginine content Walnuts have the most alpha linolenic acids (plant-based omega-3’s) How much?

Nuts are healthy but are a dense source of calories. 1oz/30g of nuts supply about 170-180 calories. Here is a chart that shows how many nuts are in 30g.

Number of Nuts in 30 grams (1oz)

Almonds: 20-24 Brazil nuts: 6-8 Pecans: 18-20 (halves) Cashews: 16-18 Pine Nuts: 150-157 Pistachios: 45-47 Walnuts: 8-11 Hazelnuts: 18-20
